This study is a two-armed randomized controlled trial of Savoring Intervention for Hong Kong adults. Savoring Intervention is one of the positive psychological interventions that is used to improve mental well-being and decrease negative emotions such as depression by enhancing people’s attentional focus on positive experiences (Bryant & Veroff, 2017). It was found that when predicting positive emotions and their ensuing psychological benefits, dispositional mindfulness and the perceived ability to savor the moment play complementary roles (Kiken, Lundberg & Fredrickson, 2017).
Participants in the intervention group will be invited to practice savoring intervention that is modified from the strategies for enhancing savoring recommended by Bryant and Veroff (2017). Participants will be instructed to take at least one photo a day for seven consecutive days that could capture a positive moment, experience, or inspiration. They will send the photos along with one to two sentences describing the positive experience to the researcher via the same WhatsApp conversation of which they have received instructions. They will be written in Chinese to make it comprehensible to the Hong Kong population.

Participants of the active control group will be invited to take one photo of neutral meaning every day in their week of participation. Specific instructions of the kind of neutral photos they should take for each day will be sent to the participants every day via WhatsApp during the week of their participation. They will send the photos along with one sentence describing the picture they have taken, such as “Day1, this is a wooden chair”. Like the instructions provided to the intervention group, instructions will be written in Chinese.
