Mild cognitive impairment (MCI)

Phase 1: Empowerment workshop for peer mentors
This workshop will be conducted in a small group format (8-9 participants/group), consisting of three major components:
i) a pre-exercise educational module: consist of two weekly 90-minute sessions, introducing topics related to MCI, effective communication strategies to help MCI patients compensate for their memory loss, common psychological barriers to exercising adherence in this patient group, and exercise safety.
ii) an exercise training module: consist of 3 sessions/week for 3 weeks; 60 minutes/session. Sessions will be delivered by research assistant to equip peer mentors with the ability to implement the exercise protocol.
iii) Booster session: it is a 120-minute booster session that will include an evaluation component to consolidate peer mentors’ knowledge and mentoring skills.
Phase 2: Exercise training module for adults with suboptimal cognitive function
Phase 2 will comprise the following elements:
i) an orientation session:
ii) 8 weeks of supervised exercise sessions: 8-week exercise module (3 sessions/week, 60-minute/session) will be conducted by the research assistant with the support of mentors and research assistant with a group size of 10 participants and 2 mentors.
iii) a counselling session
iv) follow-up support: research assistant will offer continuous support to the mentor-mentee groups through the smartphone application with encouraging messages and praises for their achievement. Moreover, he/she will pay two weekly and one biweekly onsite visits (i.e., at the location that the mentor-mentee groups identified for daily exercise practice) during the mentor-directed exercise sessions.

Peer mentors: with previous volunteering experience, ≥ 50 years old, cognitively intact (as defined by an Abbreviated Mental Test score of >6/10) and physically active (as defined the International Physical Activity Questionnaire as moderately active with 3-6 Metabolic Equivalent Tasks.
Peer mentees: aged ≥50 years, with mild cognitive impairment as defined by a score 19-26 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.
Persons with dementia, impaired mobility and communication will be excluded.
