The mobile application, Mindful Flourishing, was developed by the Institute of Future Cities of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. The ecological momentary intervention (EMI) components have been incorporated in this mobile application, which allow users to integrate mindfulness practices in their daily lives. It consists of 3 individual functions. “Recording the present moment 記錄當下” aims at cultivating the users’ awareness, by recording own emotions, physical sensations, place, people around and thoughts. “Focusing on the present moment 專注當下” consists of multiple audio-recorded mindfulness exercises including body scan, mindful breathing, 3-minute breathing space etc., varying from 3 to 13 minutes, which allow users to choose and practice mindfulness exercises according to individual needs. “Satisfying the present moment 滿足當下” provides suggestions of brief exercises for suiting the user’s identified psychological needs. Users have the flexibility to choose what function(s) to use according to their own needs and preferences in each visit. The mobile application keeps track of the users’ activities and also provides brief psychoeducation about mindfulness.
This mindfulness mobile application utilizing EMI could provide mindfulness intervention in an environment that is natural to the participants, and help users understand the relations between their mindfulness, mood and stressors at different time and place during their daily lives. Real-time interventions will be provided to users according to their specific needs at that moment to facilitate their stress regulation, enhance their well-being, and integrate new adaptive thinking and behavioral patterns into their daily lives.

The current study is two-arm, open-label, randomized controlled trial with participants randomly assigned to either the mobile application condition or waitlist control condition. Interested parties will be randomly assigned to the mobile application condition (n = 60) or the waitlist control condition (n = 60). For those in the mobile application condition, they will be invited to download the Mindful Flourishing mobile application in their smartphones, and will be given with an introduction about this study, as well as be instructed how to use the mobile application. They will be encouraged to use the mobile application at least once every day on the coming 30 days, with flexibility to choose which function(s) they would like to use each time. Those in the waitlist control condition will also be given with an introduction about the mobile application after 120 days, and will be encouraged to use the mobile application flexibly, according to own personal needs.
